GUIDELINES FOR MINORS IN LIBRARY

 PURPOSE

Eastfield College Library is committed to providing an environment conducive to research, study, and learning for all users.  Consideration for the learning environment of students, the work routine of staff, and the safety of the child requires that minors be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian while in the Library.  Procedures are in place to determine the usage of the Library by minor children not affiliated with the campus in any way.  Guidelines concerning minor children on campus in any official manner are located in the 2006-2007 / 2007-2008 Catalog, 2006-2007 Catalog Year Children on Campus.

 ELIGIBILITY

All minor children under the age of 18 may visit the Library accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.  A legal guardian is the person legally responsible for the supervision of the minor child.  Parents or legal guardians with minor children not affiliated with the campus must adhere to the Usage Rules as follows.

 USAGE RULES

1.      Children should never be left unattended in the library.  The parent or legal guardian must keep line of sight supervision of the minor child at all times.

2.      Children should not interfere with library activities or disrupt other users.

3.      Eastfield College Library collects and maintains resources which support the college curricula and are aimed at adult users. The parent or legal guardian is responsible for the use of and the intentional or inadvertent viewing or reading of such resources by their minor child.

4.      Children under the age of 18 may use the computers for research purposes only and must be under the direct supervision of the parent or legal guardian at all times.  The computers may not be used for entertainment purposes.

5.      The Library does not restrict or filter the Internet and cannot be held accountable for information or images that may be displayed.  The parent or legal guardian is responsible for the minor’s use of the Internet and possible exposure to text or images that may be unsuitable for minors on their own or other users’ computer screens.

6.      Minors may be asked for proof of age or confirmation of participation in a program, class, or activity sponsored by the college.

7.      Guardians may be asked to provide proof of legal guardianship of a minor.

8.      The parent or legal guardian accompanied by minor children may use the Group Study Rooms.

CONSEQUENCES

1.      Campus Police will be notified immediately of minors who are not accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

2.      Any employee noting the presence of an accompanied minor child should explain these guidelines to the parent or legal guardian.

3.      The parent or legal guardian will be warned should the minor’s behavior become disruptive to the learning environment.  If the disruptive behavior continues, the parent or legal guardian will be asked to leave with the child.

4.      When deemed necessary, Campus Police will be contacted for assistance with enforcing these guidelines.
